Tendon injuries can be acute (sudden onset) i.e. a rupture, or an insidious onset occurring gradually over time with no precise mechanism or cause.
Acute tendon ruptures are most common in males (10 times greater risk) between the ages of 30 – 50 years of age. Overuse tendon injuries, known as tendinopathies, are much more common than acute tendon injuries, and normally arise as a result of an increased training volume or intensity, or a change in something i.e. footwear, training surface. Runners have a 30 times greater risk of developing a tendinopathy compared to sedentary individuals, and can be frustrating as they will impact your ability to perform to the best of your ability.
