A grade 2 sprain involves disruption of some of the collagen fibres with the joint demonstrating increased available range of motion on clinical assessment, however a definitive end point is present. A grade 3 sprain involves complete tear of the ligament with excessive laxity present and no end feel on clinical assessment.
