Tendon Injuries

Tendon injuries can be acute (sudden onset) i.e. a rupture, or an insidious onset occurring gradually over time with no precise mechanism or cause.

Acute tendon ruptures are most common in males (10 times greater risk) between the ages of 30 – 50 years of age. Immediate assessment by a sports medicine clinician is needed if you suspect an acute tendon rupture in order to determine the diagnosis and formulate a management plan which would include referral for imaging and consulting with an Orthopaedic surgeon.

Overuse tendon injuries, known as tendinopathies, are much more common than acute tendon injuries, and normally arise as a result of an increased training volume or intensity, or a change in something i.e. footwear, training surface. Runners have a 30 times greater risk of developing a tendinopathy compared to sedentary individuals, and can be frustrating as they will impact your ability to perform to the best of your ability.

Treatment of tendinopathies includes:

  • Massage
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Load modification
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Taping
  • Acupuncture

What a fab practice - from reception who raised my query with the GPs,  arranged for me to email details through, and then to the GP (Dr Peck) calling me back the same day with a treatment plan, advice, and a prescription to collect.  Real service and empathy.

The receptionist was lovely and helped me get an appointment the same afternoon. Staff were highly professional, polite and friendly. Dr was extremely engaged and didn’t feel rushed in my appointment, will definitely be booking again in the future.
