Is
it Safe?
Homeopathic
remedies are all made out of natural substances which are diluted
many times and then potentised. The remedies are extremely safe
and can be used in the same dose for young babies and the very elderly.
By
choosing to consult a medically qualified homeopath you can be sure
the doctor will look at your health on the basis of conventional
diagnosis, cause and prognosis. Conventional investigations are
undertaken if appropriate.
In
a homeopathic consultation the doctor will take a very detailed
history from you, which is why your first appointment needs to be
for 30 minutes.
Your
situation with regard to your illness is individual: every symptom
will be explored in depth and the whole put together with the help
of computer analysis, in order to select the right remedy for you.
There are over 3000 homeopathic remedies, so the selection of the
remedy needs time and care.
Many
patients find the opportunity to present their story, including
all the symptoms which can seem irrelevant in a conventional setting,
to be a therapeutic experience in itself.
When
to Consider Homeopathy
- Homeopathy
can offer excellent relief of acute symptoms: many people will
have used arnica for the relief of bruising, but remedies can
also be used for stings, shocks, sprains, burns, tummy upsets
and many forms of pain.
- Homeopathy
can be used to help with very deep-seated problems, which may
have their root in a psychological trauma which occurred in the
past e.g. dizzy spells which date back to a sudden bereavement.
- Homeopathy
can be used in conditions for which there is no conventional treatment
available e.g. molluscum contagiosum in children.
- Homeopathy
can be use alongside conventional treatment to enhance the patients
well-being and ability to cope with their illness e.g. remedies
for heart problems or Parkinson's disease.
- Homeopathy
can be used to remedy specific allergies which can be diagnosed
with blood tests.
Unwanted
Effects
If
the remedy selected is not the perfect match for your symptoms,
then it may be that not all symptoms resolve: in this case a second
or third remedy may be required. Some homeopaths liken this to peeling
an onion - as one layer of symptoms resolve others become more prominent.
Homeopathic
remedies are not like conventional drugs; they enable the body to
modify itself rather than chemically modifying one symptom. Thus
it can take up to 6 weeks after a remedy is given for an improvement
to be seen. Your first review is therefore not for 6 weeks.
If
the remedy selection has been a very accurate match this can provoke
a "remedy reaction". The symptoms themselves can seem
worse for a few days before resolution occurs, or an "exteriorisation"
can occur such as a discharge of catarrh or a rash. This is generally
a good sign. By contrast, if the wrong remedy is prescribed no reaction
will occur at all.
Background
Information
Homeopathy
is one of a number of forms of complementary medicine. It can be
used alongside conventional medicines as well as in circumstances
where conventional medicine has not helped a particular problem.
Homeopathy
has been used for centuries and has been included within the National
Health Service since it was started. There are 4 major homeopathic
hospitals within the NHS: London, Bristol, Tunbridge Wells and Glasgow.
At the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital the Queen retains her own
homeopath.
I
have undertaken my 3 year training in homeopathy at The Royal London
Hospital. I have found the study and practice of homeopathic medicine
to be a complete revelation after 20 years of purely conventional
medicine. The benefit to my patients has been considerable.
