Initial
Consultation
The
first 30 minutes consultation will be spent assessing the condition
and to make sure that no further investigations need to be done.
Once the doctor has identified the condition, she will explain the
treatment plan and start acupuncture.
The
needles used are sterile and individually packed. They are disposed
of after use.
At
further consultations, your progress will be assessed and further
acupuncture will be carried out. Usually two appointments
a week for 2 weeks are needed, then reducing to one a week.

Benefits
Acupuncture
is not a cure but a treatment which can help to relieve pain. The
effect of acupuncture differs for each person. Some of the effects:
- Pain
Relief: some people may notice some improvement after
the first treatment. Quite often it occurs after the third treatment.
- Improvement
in Sleep: most people notice that they sleep for longer
and that the quality of the sleep improves
- Relaxation:
acupuncture is a very good relaxant.
- Increase
in Well-Being: acupuncture can make you feel both physically
and mentally better. It can also increase your energy levels.
Side
Effects
There
are some minimal risks associated with acupuncture:
- Bruising
at site of needle:
this is especially true if you are taking any drugs that thin
the blood such as aspirin, warfarin, steroids etc.
- Sickness:
this can occur in about 1 in 10 people, usually during or immediately
after treatment. It is caused by your body reacting to the release
of endorphins (your natural pain-relieving chemical)
- Fainting/Dizziness:
this can occur on rare occasions during or after treatment and
for this reason the first treatment is carried out with you lying
down if possible.
- Drowsiness:
you may feel sleepy after treatment or sleep particularly well
that night. Avoid treatment on the day of any special evening
(you may fall asleep!).
- Increase
in Pain:
your pain may feel a little worse immediately after one treatment.
This is not unusual and can be a positive effect. If it continues
after three treatments, then no further acupuncture will be carried
out.
Background
Information
Medical
conditions are not always alleviated by conventional practices.
The
Chinese have practised Acupuncture for over 3000 years. They believe
the body contains channels or meridian along which Q1 (pronounced
Chee) energy flows. This flow of energy is balanced by positive
and negative forces. If this balance is affected then pain and disease
can occur.
In
the last 40 years we now know that acupuncture also causes the release
of our own natural pain-relieving chemicals, endorphins. I have
found acupuncture a valuable addition to my medical practice.
